I'm Brian Lee Burke, and I've been a REALTOR since 2003. Anthem Ranch in Broomfield and BackCountry in Highlands Ranch both have big amenity packages, but they're different kinds of communities: Anthem Ranch is a 55+ active-adult community, and BackCountry is a gated community with no age restriction. Here's how they compare, using MLS data I pulled on October 29, 2026 and official community and city sources.

Broomfield vs Highlands Ranch

Broomfield has been a consolidated city and county since November 15, 2001, with 79,174 residents in the 2025 Census estimate. Highlands Ranch is unincorporated Douglas County, where the HRCA, the Highlands Ranch Metro District and the county share the roles a city would play. The two are on opposite sides of the metro, so commute and airport trips differ a lot; drive yours from the address.
