Here is what I have learned the hard way, and this is what you should be concerned about for a smooth and hassle-free move.

The Dos

The four most essential boxes must be checked before the moving day.

1. Get Rid of the Unnecessary Stuff

This step should be taken when deciding what to keep and discard in your new space.

Once you have decided, you shouldn’t hoard unwanted stuff and scrap it off. This will save you money and help you skip the fuss.

Another pro of getting rid of it early is that you will have more time to sort out your new home. So, dump your unused stuff in the first place.

2. Measure the Doorways of Your New Space

Almost every home has oversized furniture that is difficult to move, like king-sized beds and sleeper sofas. It gets more troublesome when that furniture has to go through the tiny doors of your new house.

This happened to me when I was moving back in 2019. I didn’t know that the doorways of the new house were tight and when my furniture arrived, it couldn’t go through. So, I had to disassemble the furniture in the hallway to move it in.

It would help if you didn’t do that. Measure the exact openings of the doorways and your furniture. If it can go through, then you are good to go. If not, you must change the furniture or disassemble it before taking it to the new space.

3. Label Your Boxes

If you skip this step, you will likely be scratching your head in confusion as you look at jumbled boxes. So, what’s the solution?

Label your boxes with names and where they will go, like bedroom 1, main bedroom, or ground floor living space. This will save you and your movers from trouble and keep the process efficient.

4. Get Your Home WiFi Sorted in Advance

We live in a hyperactive digital era, and the internet is essential in every home.

And it makes sense because everything we do is related to the internet.

Everything we do needs an internet connection, from shopping to studying. Before I moved, I did some homework to find out what ISPs were available in my new area. Whatever that would be, it’s recommended that you give the rooms two to three checks after you have packed your stuff.

The Don’ts

These things are a big no-no if you want to move without much fuss.

1. Hire a Mover Without Doing Enough Research

Multiple options are available if you need help from a moving company. But not all of them are going to be the same. Some of them will need to improve at doing what they do.

So, before you opt for one, ensure they have a proven track record and enough positive reviews.

Also, this is the step where you shouldn’t try to save money because a cheap mover company can get you in big trouble and cost you more than you expected.

Always go for a reliable option when it is time to move your things.

2. Fill Your Drawers to the Top

No, don’t do it. If you overstuff your drawer, the furniture will become heavy, making it difficult to move.

Even if the mover guys hit weights four days a week, your stuff inside the drawer will likely rattle around, which could break it. It’s better you remove the things from the drawers and put them in a box.

Moving to a new house is an exciting but overwhelming task. But with the right approach, you can reduce the hassle and make it less overwhelming.

To wrap things up, let me give you a pro tip: If you plan to hire movers, do the pick-and-drop yourself and let them handle just the loading and unloading. This will help you get the best bang for your buck.
